about

One often ponders artifacts and the clues that unlock the secrets of the past. But what artifacts are we leaving today that far-future generations hope to decipher? One thing is sure: many of our artifacts are digital, the ones and zeroes delicately revealed underneath the dust of neglect and time. Digital archaeology will undoubtedly arise, but due to degradation and faulty archiving, most digital artifacts will hold more questions than answers. The ancient world delivers broken slates of symbolic text or cracked fragments from missing statuettes. However, we'll provide future archeologists with corroded hard drives and landfill graveyards filled with discarded electronics.

Florigenix (aka Nicholas Dallwitz) is interested in crafting artifacts set in the present, shaded by the past, and steeped in the coming days. Wild Light is an album that transmits utopian visions through the lens of innocent optimism, an understanding of music as the breath of the natural world, and the exploration of bygone technologies for evidence of the arcane. The album's 14 songs vibrate with a soothing energy, like ripples flowing upward from a natural, sonic spring.

From his home base on the Fleurieu Peninsula, South Australia, Florigenix regularly ventures into the remote bushland for the inspiration and setting of his productions. An organic presence is infused throughout Florigenix's music as the spirit of nature inhabits the circuitry and transistors responsible for his sound-craft. Field recordings further this presence, captured by the artist during treks into the landscape. "I wanted the album to be immersive and environmental," says Florigenix. "But almost orchestral as well, contrasting against these otherworldly feelings."

Wild Light also features the biological element of Florigenix's voice — his actual breath — as the producer enhances the compositions with intonations and deeply sung drones. The vocal acts as another instrument, melding coherently with the layers of evocative electronics. For Florigenix, his voice was necessary when, in the bush, his synthesizers weren't available. "This was partly due to convenience as I was working from my laptop in my van," Florigenix explains. "I'd wake up in the middle of the night and listen to something right after dreaming. Then, when a track needed filling out with harmonies, I used the MacBook's inbuilt mic to layer vocals over the top. I recorded most of the vocals this way — laptop and headphones in bed."

Some of Wild Light's notable moments combine Florigenix's go-with-the-flow attitude and a spiritual, Earth-focused intention. "Music For Temporary Weightlessness" imagines a space without gravity, whether inside a floatation tank or within one's reflective thoughts. The album's opener, "Open, Winged Avatar," begins with gentle rain-like droplets before shifting into something moving and dramatic. As the title implies, one can continually transform the nature of our avatars. "Forest Guides and Deity Statues" aurally dissects the collective organism to reveal its makeup of intricate, smaller parts. It sounds like a walk in the forest heralding a great discovery. And "Diamond Steps to Heart Throne" is bursting with Florigenix's examination of positive change. The song's tenderness is reassuring as streams of synth pads, voice overlays, and natural sounds wash over the listener. Florigenix describes the song's inspiration: "It's the idea of opening to one's heart and the hard steps of that process."

Florigenix's aura of optimism is a welcome respite from the sheets of concrete darkness that often surround us. In this distinctive and consequential time, humankind is forced to make impactful choices about how to reconcile the environment and technology. Wild Light serves as an artifact of our age, creating a picture of possible synergies for today's audiences while providing an instructive snapshot for those who may listen in the future.
